The Ladybug Goes with the Fluo Against the Flow

The Ladybug Chronicles-Rainboots 06

It rains and rains and rains so much these days that it is almost impossible to believe that winter is about to end and in a month Spring will arrive!

The other day I wore stars to brighten the rainy day, this time I’m going “fluo” to go against the flow with my new pair of fluorescent blue rain boots from JuJu for Topshop. I love these funny shoes, especially in this weather! …And even better, they glow in the dark!!!

Here I am wearing them with a Topshop dress from a few season ago (the retro pattern is lovely!), a Benetton cardigan, a Mango hat and a vintage bag that I got last year at my first Vintage Workshop in Milan.

The Ladybug Plays with the Ghosts of Vintage Future at the Vintage Workshop© in Milan

The Ladybug Chronicles-0862If you follow my blog you might know that I get excited when the Vintage Workshop© comes to town: not only because Angela Eupani, the founder and the and the heart of the event presented by the Associazione Culturale Ricercatori Moda d’Epoca, is a lovely friend of mine, but also because I know that I will find some of the most amazing pieces around in a room!

The Ladybug Chronicles-VW2instaAlmost two weeks before the beginning of the Fashion shows, Milan starts the busy job of hosting the fashion insiders events around town: at the Vintage Workshop©; buyers, stylists and designers can buy or rent pieces to be used as inspiration for their next collections. One of the homes of this side-bar fashion life is the Palazzo Stelline- where the event was held. It’s exciting to get this “preview” of what will be re-invented on catwalks next season. It says a lot about the role of vintage clothing and accessories in modern fashion: there’s nothing new under the sun and the past is still the first source of inspiration for the future! From these few days in Milan, you can forecast the trends for Spring-Summer 2015.

The Ladybug Chronicles-VW2This year, apart from the usual amazing pieces that Angela brought, she decided to entertain her public with a special screening of a short film from digital artist, DarkAngel0. I had the chance to watch the premiere on the first day and I was absolutely amazed by the concept of time and space (and the soundtrack!) presented in this film and by the talent of this artist. I totally understand why Angela decided to collaborate with him, especially when I saw shots of the vintage pieces I admired in the room come to life on the screen!

The Ladybug Chronicles-0856 The Ladybug Chronicles-0853 The Ladybug Chronicles-0849 The Ladybug Chronicles-0848 The Ladybug Chronicles-0845 The Ladybug Chronicles-0840No need to tell you how amazing the selection of vintage was (you can see some of my pictures here). I took my time playing with some amazing pieces like the heart shaped frames and coral hat, and the crazy pre-industrial hat (as Angela defined as: an industrial trend foreseen in the ’50s!) just to get in the mood of the surroundings (the new industrial was for sure one of the most important trends identified here).  I had a “grandma’s closet moment playing the diva among all those wonderful vintage pieces!

The Ladybug Chronicles-0865I am wearing all black with a vintage aran cardigan, but you will see more of this outfit soon on the blog!

The Ladybug Chronicles-0873Vintage Workshop© will be back in Milan soon; in the meanwhile, you can check them out during the Linea Pelle event in Bologna- if you are around!

The Ladybug Visit’s Her First Padova Vintage Festival

Ladybug-3959

This year has been full of vintage firsts for me. A few weeks ago I visited the Padova Vintage Festival for the first time and much like the Summer Jamboree in Senigallia, it was full of vintage lovers and people with lots of knowledge of vintage. It was so refreshing and surprising at the same time.

I mean, it’s understandable that you meet people at the Jamboree who are deep seeded vintage aficionados because of it’s long and successful history, but I’m a bit ashamed to say that I prepared to go to Padova Vintage Festival, which began in 2010, with a bit of prejudice. But in two short years it’s amazing how profound and successful it’s become.

Padua is a wonderful town (I had time to have a look around in the city center and I really liked it!), and the location of the Festival makes it absolutely comfortable to reach. But the location itself is absolutely lovely: the agora, which sits in the center of it all, is surrounded by arches and the upper level has a lot of space and a lovely view of what’s happening in the “market’s area of the village.”

With that said, I had the chance to meet some of my favorite stallers (and to buy from them, of course!) and some new entries that I was pleased to meet. Coming into contact with familiar people and familiar items made me understand the key of their success, and it is this: their staff and their attention to marketing and details. Going to the Padova Vintage Festival was a different experience, even if the actors of the movie were the same… because of all the Chantilly cream, everything looked much more fresh. There were models dressed in vintage, a fashionable public, every genre of vintage was represented, some alternative celebrities, a beautifully well decorated location and, of course, a queue outside the doors!  It was “the place to be.”

And it worked! There was a lot of marketing and maybe a bit less spontaneity, but the result was interesting.  As for the prices I won’t complain: some exaggerations of course – as usual – but the average pricing was cool.

I was really curious about going there especially since I couldn’t go last year and, although it was a bit more commercial than my tastes usually go for, I really enjoyed my day there and my shopping of course!!

A.N.G.E.L.O, Shabby Chic, Dorotea Vintage, Oggetti Smarriti, Magnifica Preda, Stondo, Lamù Vintage and many other old “vintage friends” were there, but it was also time to meet new friends like the vintage collector Lorenzo Chiti from Deuda Vintage (from whom I bought this lovely vintage cardigan!)

If the market owned the agora, the upper level was almost completely dedicated to vintage through another wonderful expo. A.N.G.E.L.O brought his vintage Missoni collection, but there were also amazing antique suitcases and travel bags from Arte Viaggi or a real vintage barber shop (there will be a nice surprise about it soon on the blog!).

For the occasion I was almost completely dressed in vintage: vintage green silk dress from Humana Vintage, ASOS cardi and socks, lovely brogues from Shoegasm in NYC, H&M skinny belt, vintage leather bag from the Vintage Workshop in Milan the week before and a lovely fascinator from Camomilla in Milan.

Other finds of the day:  gorgeous French vintage glasses from Oggetti Smarriti

Amazing orange “witch-hat” from Stondo Firenze

And… of course… a logoed Vintage Festival canvas tote to put all my new finds in it!

The Ladybug’s Incredible Exclusive: Behind the Scenes of the Vintage Workshop® in Milan

Ladybug-3946I was lying on a Ligurian beach a few weeks ago when I received an email that made me almost fall off of my towel… it was from one of the most one of a kind events in the world, the Vintage Workshop®. Not only was I kindly invited to attend the event to be held in Milan from September 11th through the 13th, but I was given the exclusivity to photograph and get a behind the scenes look of one of the most private events of the vintage scene!

Ladybug-3934My adored Angela Eupani, from Sculptures to Wear, is the beautiful mind behind the event which takes place twice a year in Milan. Just a few weeks before the crowds arrive for the “Intertex Milano,” “Ready to Show” and “MIFF” (Milan International Fast Fashion) Fashion catwalks to be held in the same location (the beautiful Palazzo delle Stelline in Milan), Angela masterfully sets the atmosphere with Fashion’s classic, unique and most treasured vintage pieces. The idea of the Vintage Workshop® is to offer to the fashion professional, as well as private vintage lovers, the possibility to find the best selection of quality and luxury vintage mostly coming from private collectors and vintage hunters and from everywhere in the world! The pieces I found there are incredibly rare and one of a kind: I couldn’t stop staring at some incredible boots and handbags that I completely fell in love with.

Ladybug-3928

Ladybug-3921The concept is simple: vintage amateurs can buy or rent the pieces for private use (like I did with this wonderful tan leather handbag!), designers may use it as inspiration for the new collections… solidifying the “extracted truth” that fashion doesn’t create anymore- but recycles what’s already been created from the most intensely creative years of fashion (namely ’60s, ’70s and ’80s).

Ladybug-3936This explains, in my opinion, why vintage purists don’t accept ’90s era fashion as vintage: their overall consensus is creative experimentation became an endangered species after the Chicxulub Impact of ’80s fashion. After that decade, everything has been a continuous recreation from the past eras, and the recapitulation prevails to this day. I don’t agree 100% with this dismal characterization, but I accept part of it: if it is true that most of what is created in fashion nowadays takes inspiration from the past, it is also true that the effort to create something different, even if with retro inspiration, is still very high and the results are really remarkable- especially with French couturiers.

Ladybug-3922As a vintage lover, I felt like I was in paradise in the midst of the most beautiful clothing and accessories from the ’20s to the ’80s. And Angela’s incredible knowledge of the history of those pieces left me completely stunned. It was a sort of journey through the history of unique pieces, like this amazing Yves Saint suit or Moschino ensemble, or this wonderful Roberta di Camerino dress and belt.

Ladybug-3896I fell in love with most of the shoes and bags featured there and I took the occasion to take some pictures with my favorite pieces (at least those that I could take pictures of!).

Ladybug-3909I felt like Alice in Wonderland for an afternoon and I’m very humbled, honored and excited to share all this great exclusive with you, Lovebugs!

Ladybug-3912Ladybug-207The Vintage Workshop® for luxury fashion will return on the 8th and 9th of October in Bologna. It will be a special event focusing on vintage leather accessories with a special fashion exhibition and show for the 2014-2015 collection. Don’t miss it out!
